Maddison Atkins

I know this is long. Just read the explanation part. The rest is just to document what this theory is based on. This is also an example of the method I described here.

Facts:
+ Omaha letter: "Brought them back, I released them into their home, and they do seem better now. Time will tell if they are safe from disease. My favorite, my Maddison is still a bit shaky. I'm not certain what she will do after the delivery of the vets treatment. I'm afraid that if I lose her, then all my love for these animals will be deflated. I've never had such a clear connection."
+ Omaha letter: "...and I'm left with my thoughts, your letters, and the guilt; the inescapable guilt"
+ Omaha letter - hidden message: "NEED U. KIDS DIE. CONFIRM. BIRD. SPINE."
+ Claremont letter: "I don't think I'll be able to make another trip away to check her health. I just hope she's ok. Apparently it wasn't protocol for me to leave the first two times. Maybe that explains the new ***** He has a friendlier face, I think, but ***** it's tough to even get away for a walk around."
+ Claremont letter - hidden message: "FIND MADDISON ATKINS SFASU SPINAL TAP BIRDS UNCONFIRMED"
+ Maddison attends Stephen F Austin.
+ Maddison complained about being tired. (might indicate a health issue)
+ Maddison might have epilepsy, like her mom.
+ The woman delivering the pigeons said that they were sick. They vet checked them and said that they were fine.
+ The name Thomas was on both envelopes found at Omaha and Claremont
+ 4 or 5 dozen pigeons got delivered at the vet at June 1st and all but the five maddison has were picked up on june 8th.
+ Pigeon box message: "wait to send safe for sixty lives at risk x we are so sorry".
- Maddison's spine was checked out a few months ago, the doctors said she was fine.

Conditions(assumptions):
* Abby is the owner of the pigeons.
* Abby is the woman who dropped them off at the vets and picked them up later.
* Abby works at a place where she is very restricted in her actions
* Thomas is her significant other
* Abby wrote the letters and the hidden messages to Thomas
* Abby is trying to hide her conversation about Maddison
* In the letter Abby is actually talking about the person Maddison
* The pigeons were never sick
* Maddison is a test subject
* There have been cases like this before Maddison
* The birds are a means of communication
* Abby has never contacted test subjects before
* Thomas sent the cards to tell Maddison to confirm he found her

Explanation:
Abby is caught up in this in a work related way. She got into it on her own free will, but things started happening that she doesn't agree with. Possibly things that aren't on the level. Abby feels very guilty about her part in this. That explains why her actions are so restricted.
All the things we see are ways of her trying to reach out and make someone help her, either Thomas, or someone else through Thomas. Thomas is Abby's significant other, that's why it makes sense for her to write him letters.
Maddison is a test subject of some sort, which is why she got dragged in. She uses double speak to hide talking about Maddison and make it sound like she's just talking about her pigeons. She dropped them off at the vet with an excuse of them being sick, so nobody would notice a few were missing when she brought them back. The vet was just a way to get the birds and the note to Maddison.
After that Abby began to send messages to Thomas to also find Maddison (because he seems to have a higher freedom of movement compared to Abby). The hidden messages were meant for Thomas as well, he might have read them using another method, like UV light.
The first part of the first letter looks like she is talking about the pigeons, but in fact she is talking about Maddison and the delivery of the birds at her doorstep. She wrote this letter quickly after she picked the birds up from the vets. (except for the ones she sent to Maddison)
She wants Thomas to find Maddison and confirm her health, because she can't get away herself anymore. The first method was to find a girl named Maddison (written in letter), and to check on her medical history for spinal tests to confirm this is the girl they are looking for. Second letter hides the girls entire name (Maddison Atkins), and tells him to look for a specific test results (spinal tap).
The person who should have kept Abby from going away the first two times was replaced with someone more strict.
Whatever Abby is working on, this isn't the first time and things have gone wrong before. Kids have died. She is really worried about Maddison and wants to prevent anything happening to her. Abby is counting on the birds to save Maddison. Most likely as a means of communication. This is the first time she reaches out to someone (had such a clear connection).
Thomas has found Maddison and is pointing her to the letters so she can confirm this fact. (By sending a bird?)

Actions:
* Hold on to the birds as long as possible, they're important. Wait for a reply to send any more.
* Keep a close eye on Maddison's health.
* Do not contact the police, as it might harm Abby's position

After a quick read, this makes a lot of sense to me.

Of course, other theories are still viable but this makes sense. ;-)

I will add a few things if I may (based on theory)

1. Abby found maddison first, and left pigeons on the door for her with a cryptic message

2. After finding Maddison, Abby began to send messages to Thomas to also find Madison (because he seems to have a higher freedom of movement compared to Abby). The first method was to find a girl named Maddison (written in letter), and to check on her medical history for spinal tests to confirm this is the girl they are looking for.

3. Second letter hides the girls entire name (Maddison Atkins) in the hidden message, and tells him to look for a specific test results (spinal tap).

This theory helps explain a time line problem (why send a message saying look for maddison when it is obvious she is already found?). These two letters were sent/given to thomas between when the pigeons were dropped off and when the first postcard appeared to Maddison. They were sent to help Thomas find Maddison and confirm she is the girl they are looking for. Thomas is sending them to Maddison to help her catch up on the situation.

The letter may not be written in Lemon, but may be written in Milk or another substance that shows up under both UV light and heat. Thus, Thomas saw the note first with UV light and left it for Monica to find with the heat suggestion.

Other things:

Abby knows OF Maddison at least (we don't know for sure how or how deeply). Maddison's health is of great concern to Abby. Abby seems to want to keep Madison's location a secret (otherwise her name and location of her schooling would not have been so hidden on second message).

Abby and Thomas were involved in something that makes Abby feel guilty, and seems to want to correct the situation.

I don't believe abby is a "prisoner" or "Captive" so much as she cannot carry out her secret mission in view of others. She must keep her actions hidden and thus is not able to act in a more direct way.

Just my thoughts.

I agree- This seems to fit well. I also think that the pigeons could also be test subjects, for the same disease that madison has (if she has one). They could be acting as a warning to thomas or madison if they become ill. (hence vet, the other pigeons could be associated with other tests and people, they even have been left at other peoples houses!)

It seems that the secret messages were meant for thomas, and since we have reason to believe he is communicating useful information to us. Maybe there should be an effort to communicate Abby's original secret messages to him, he could respond with more information. If he realises that madison knows more then he may fill in some gaps.

This theory and the explanation seems to fit much of what we know up to now. It's going to be a little hard to simply confirm in it's present form (without a lot of caveats) just because it is not the "small" sort of theory, simple facts, aimed for in the original guidelines.

There are, however, several relatively small facts within the explanation that may or may not be confirmed as we go along. (some are already in the assumptions list). For example:
* The vet was just a way to get the birds and the note to Maddison. (perhaps the vet played some integral part in testing or treating the birds)
* Abby dropped the pigeons off at the vet with an excuse of them being sick, so nobody would notice a few were missing when she brought them back. (perhaps Abby was truely concerned that the birds had some illness, or perhaps she just need a safe place to store them for awhile since she is on the road)

etc.

I think the structure of a large theory that tries to explain a lot of things combined with a list of [UNCONFIRMED] assumptions is a pretty good way to improve our picture of things incrementally. It will be interesting to see how this thread develops as the story continues.

Looks like we were dead on so far...but recent video clarifies some things more:

1. Thomas was the lab technician that ran the test on Maddison, confirming she is the unknown.

2. Thomas leaves the clinic, and communicates with Abby to find her.

Explains how Abby and Thomas know each other, and how Thomas is on the lamb, so to speak, train hopping possible.

Awesome... i think it is very plausible... I think you should share it with Maddison... filling in these blanks may really motivate her... and it may make the "bad" things found under the ink blots a little easier to deal with in context.

i agree with the holding of the birds. I didn't agree with the first sending of the bird. esp since the message says wait to send but who knows :/

maybe abby is maddisons mother. maybe she didn't really die and that is what someone told maddison and her father and that is why they do not like to talk about it. or she left maddisons father and that is what he told maddison. it would explain why she said "my maddison"

I have a couple of thoughts on this.

1. Abby didn't really know exactly what she was getting into when she took this job. I think she thought it was more of an animal testing facility, and only after ariving found out it was girls she'd be working on.
2. I think she knows all of her comunications will be checked...that's why she's been so careful about hiding the messages.
3. Thomas left the lab so they couldn't use him to find Maddicon, since she means so much to Abby.
4. There is the possibility that Maddison is actually adopted...and no one has told her....Abby may be her biological mother...which would explain why she is so conserned about her.
5. Abby doesn't want to be doing what she is now being forced to do...the last letter basically said she isn't allowed to leave.
